Greenland has reduced its total Arctic sweet shrimp catch and raised the cod quo

According to the latest announcement from the Greenland government, the country has adjusted its main fishing quotas (TAC) for 2026 in accordance with the recommendations of scientific institutions. Among them, the total allowable catch of Arctic sweet shrimp (Coldwater shrimp) has been significantly reduced, while the quota for Cod (Cod) has been increased.

The Greenlandic government has stated that the total catch limit (TAC) for cold water shrimp fishing grounds in the west for 2026 has been set at 75,000 tons, a reduction of 8,125 tons compared to 2025. This reduction is fully in line with the latest recommendations of the scientific committee, aiming to ensure the sustainable use of shrimp resources

Meanwhile, the quota for cold-water shrimp in East Greenland has been set at 7,000 tons, a decrease of 550 tons compared to last year. The government pointed out that the shrimp biomass in the area is in the "cautious zone" (cautious zone), so the fishing pressure needs to be moderately reduced.

In contrast, the quota for cod has seen an increase. The total catch of cod off the coast of Southeast and East Greenland in 2026 has been raised to 40,000 tons, up from 35,000 tons in 2025. Among them, Dohrn Bank was allocated a quota of 32,000 tons, and Southeast Greenland was allocated 8,000 tons.

In addition, the cod fishing quota for the waters off West Greenland is 16,000 tons, of which 4,800 tons are allocated to the North Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) 1A-1C area and 11,200 tons to the 1D-1F area.

The Greenland government also pointed out that the quota for Greenland halibut in the waters off West Greenland still needs to be further negotiated and confirmed with Canada. The quota for this fish species in East Greenland has been set at 7,893 tons.

Meanwhile, in 2026, the fishing quota for Atlantic redfish (Sebastes norvegicus) off the coast of East Greenland is 4,515 tons, while the quota for another type of redfish (Sebastes mentella) is 300 tons.

In addition, the fishing quota of the Greenland fishing fleet for Blue whiting in international waters is 4,597 tons.

Industry analysts believe that this quota adjustment reflects Greenland's principle of "giving equal weight to science-driven and ecological balance" in fishery management. Cold water shrimp, as one of the most economically valuable seafood in Greenland, although the reduction of its quota may have a short-term impact on export earnings, it will help maintain the long-term sustainability of the resources. The increase in cod catches reflects that the resources of this fish species have recovered well in recent years, bringing new growth momentum to the fishery industry.
