Peru's squid production has soared by 245%, with upgraded regulations and satell

According to the South Pacific Giant Squid Sustainable Management Council, the annual catch of Peruvian giant squid (Pota) is expected to reach 650,000 tons, a 245% increase from 188,300 tons in 2024, setting a new high in nearly a decade. This growth is not only driven by the improvement of fishery conditions, but also by the dual impetus of policy reform and technological regulation

Data from Peru's Ministry of Production shows that from January to July 2025 alone, the number of giant squids landed has reached 441,600 tons, a year-on-year increase of 155.6%. In 2024, the squid resources once sharply declined. However, in 2025, by strengthening the supervision of foreign fishing vessels, optimizing the fishing system and implementing Supreme Decree No. 014-2024-PRODUCE, the Peruvian government required all foreign fishing vessels to be connected to the country's satellite system (SISESAT), which greatly enhanced the efficiency of supervision.

Meanwhile, the implementation of the "Supreme Decree No. 003-2025-PRODUCE" in March completed the update of the "Regulations on the Management of Giant Squid Fisheries" (ROP) after a 15-year hiatus, establishing legal operation standards and resource allocation rules for artisan fisheries, which is regarded by the industry as a "landmark in the system".

Technological regulation is also an important driver for the recovery of Peru's fishery. As of November 2025, the satellite monitoring coverage rate of Peruvian handcrafted fishing vessels has increased by 47%, and the number of controlled vessels has risen from 1,600 to 2,350. Meanwhile, 557 handcrafted fishing vessels have been officially registered with the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO), and 1,200 have been equipped with emergency beacon devices (EPIRB), strengthening the safety and prevention and control system. The Innovation Ocean Action Foundation (I4OA) stated that Peru's enforcement efforts in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) have significantly outtaken those of other tee-catching countries in the South Pacific.
